About the Church
The Reverend Sims Ladell, Sr. is reputed to have founded and to have been
the first pastor of record of the Mt. Olive Missionary Baptist Church in the
year 1874. Mt. Olive Missionary Baptist Church celebrates 136 years of
service to the city of North Little Rock. During its 136 years, Mt. Olive has
been housed in seven buildings. The church was organized in the year 1874
on Bethany Road in North Little Rock, Arkansas. The church was situated
approximately four miles east of what is now known as Rose City. The church
moved from Bethany Road to Prothro Lane, the year is uncertain. The edifice
was destroyed by storm in 1915.
Mt. Olive moved approximately two miles east of Rose City, to Highway 30,
on the banks of the Arkansas River in 1916. In 1927, the Mt. Olive
congregation purchased property at 902 Atkinson Street in North Little Rock.
During the construction of the new edifice, the Mt. Olive Baptist church
worshipped in the Freewill Baptist Church. The church edifice was destroyed
by fire in 1932. During the reconstruction of the new edifice, the church
used the facilities of the First Baptist Church in Tie Plant. In 1949, the
Congregation managed to save $23,000 and the old structure was
demolished and a new foundation laid. The pastor during this period was
Reverend Frank James Williams. Reverend Williams would not live to see the
structure completed. Reverend Nelson King Curry oversaw the completion of
the structure. In its present location, the church has been renovated three
times. The Mt. Olive Missionary Baptist Church and her various leaders have
consistently maintained a focus on spiritual health of its membership. Mt.
Olive has had and continues to have strong and well-attended Sunday School
and Prayer Meeting and Bible Study classes. Mt. Olive has maintained
long-standing participation in the Union District Sunday School and B.T.U.
Congress. The earliest record of participation is 1952, at its development as
an educational arm of the National Baptist Convention. According to church
history, Reverend N. K. Curry served as the educational director for the newly
formed congress. His was the idea to establish banner attendance awards to
increase participation among areas churches. Rev. Curry is proud to share
that his Mt. Olive "brought home the attendance banner for several years."
Mt. Olive youth and adults continue to play a role in the local congress. The
2009 Congress saw Mt. Olive taking the attendance banner once again and
receiving 3rd place in the number of students receiving honor roll distinction
in their schools. Mt. Olive continues to shine as our current Pastor, Rev.
Victor Joe Moore, serves as Assistant Dean of the Congress.
